who is Jamey Alea?
Jamey Alea is a printmaker based in Buffalo, NY. He began his artistic career studying digital art at Canisius University, with a concentration on photography and video editing. After graduating, he worked as a software engineer for a decade, before being drawn back into the art world when he discovered a passion for distinctly analog art, in the form of printmaking and letterpress in particular. Ever since, he has been working closely with the WNY Book Arts Center, helping out in a variety of different roles and teaching letterpress classes.

Fire Ecology Press was created in 2022, after Jamey successfully kickstarted their first big project, the Tarot of Sorts. Since then, it has evolved into an online store and a small popup shop that can be frequently be found at artist's markets in the western NY area.

artist statement
When I first discovered letterpress, I had no idea the kind of impact it would ultimately make on my life. But the first time I pulled a poster off of a Vandercook SP20, I felt like I discovered something about myself as well. I spent a lot of time bouncing around between artistic mediums, and having trouble taking myself seriously as an artist as a result. Finding letterpress and knowing that I finally understood my medium was <what was it? lol>

There’s something about letterpress that just lights up my soul. I love the tactile-ness of it, how real it is. After years in software, I love working on something I can touch and smell, something I can physically hand to someone else and say “I made this.” I love the resourcefulness of it. I love figuring out the puzzle of how to make a print look a certain way given the tools I have access to, and adapting if I can’t get it to look the way I want. Some of my best work has been born out of that sort of adaptation, throwing away an idea that doesn’t work and incorporating what I’ve done so far into a new design. I love the history of it too. I love thinking about the legacy of all the printmakers who have come before me throughout history, all the hands who have used the same tools as my hands. I love the feeling of making something new from something old, of keeping something about the past alive.
